What is Acne?

Most dermatologists agree that acne is caused by at least three factors: hormones, bacteria and oil secreted by the skin.

Hormonal contribution is usually due to male hormones produced by both males and females. Many people notice that their acne gets worse during puberty, when these hormones start to increase. This, however, is not the only time that hormones worsen acne. Women notice acne flares prior to menstruation as well as during their mid and late forties, when hormonal fluctuations begin. Oil produced by the skin is another factor in acne. The oil glands of the skin (sebaceous glands) are attached to the hair follicles of the skin. In response to a variety of factors (including male hormones) they can enlarge and produce more sebum (oil). This sebum can block the hair follicle (pore) and cause acne. [Click here for treatments]

Bacteria are the third contributing factor to acne, specifically a species know as Propionibacterium Acnes. There are many treatments by prescription and over the counter to kill bacteria or to make the environment unfavorable for it to grow. [Click here for treatments]
